The origins of Sterling Silver go back to the 13th Century when King Edward I of England decided that all silver items were to be 92.5% of pure silver with the remaining 7.5% to be made up with other alloys, usually copper, hence 925 Sterling Silver. The use of the stamp 925 on products started after 1870.
Recycled Sterling Silver is precious silver extracted from silver that has been previously used. Once the silver is separated from the other metals it is mixed with, it is melted down and reused to make new silver products. No purity is lost in the process of extracting Sterling Silver from used Sterling Silver items, the silver produced at the end of the process is still pure silver.
A move to recycled Sterling Silver will reduce CO2 emissions, water usage and other environmental and social impacts, as metals recycling requires fewer resources than mining new metals.
