The UK men’s jewellery market has been growing consistently over the last few years with this trend showing no sign of stopping. So where has this come from and what’s driving it?
Historically, men were the predominant wearers of jewellery with adornments seen as a sign of wealth and stature, wherein post that era women’s jewellery took centre stage and men’s jewellery became confined to watches, cufflinks, wedding bands and for the more adventurous, signet rings.
Fast forward to the world of hip hop where heavy gold and embellished jewellery was the play, the scene created a stereotype for the type of man that could and would wear jewellery.
In more recent years we are now seeing a more mainstream approach to men’s jewellery.
Men are becoming more confident in their decision to wear jewellery whether that be the more classic, timeless pieces or more statement, men are choosing jewellery that is unique to their style.
With accessories playing a key role on every fashion catwalk, the upsurgence of the men’s jewellery trend has been largely driven by the hype within the celebrity world. With a broadened demographic, high profile artists the likes of Paul Mescal, Timothée Chalamet, Harry Styles, Kendrick Lamar and Jude Law to name a few, are all making jewellery a core part of their look. With an equally strong presence amongst influencers and in reality TV Shows such as Love Island, Made In Chelsea and TOWIE, the growth in the men’s jewellery market is very clear to see.
Chains and bracelets appear to be the most popular and as the stacking and layering trend takes the lead in this sector, men are adopting a more casual style, with jewellery being a staple part of any outfit.
With earrings also being a big part of the men’s jewellery ensemble, many opting for a simple single stud or hoop, no longer part of an occasion look, these are the norm for daily wear.
The Rings trend tends to be on pairing a mix of styles from pairing up simple bands with embellished pieces to finish the look.
Having seen a strong uplift in more mid-range, classic jewellery, simply styled Sterling Silver has become a staple part of every man’s jewellery collection. Pieces such as curb chain necklaces, signet rings, pendants, cuff bracelets, band rings and snake chain bracelets are considered a more subtle approach and an opportunity to brighten up casual everyday wear whilst exploring the new world of men’s jewellery.
The men’s jewellery market is set to expand for the foreseeable future. The question is, will they reclaim centre stage?
